Research Institutions
Conglomerates, Subsidiary and Division
Institution
An organization or establishment founded for a specific purpose. This could be dedicated to education, public service or culture.
For example, the institution that produces Inception is Legendary Pictures. The institution that distributes Inception is Warner Brothers.

Subsidiary
A company whose controlling interest is owned by another company. Sub means beneath something.
For example, Legendary Entertainment is a subsidiary of Wanda Group.

Division
A discrete part of a company, that may operate under the same name and legal responsibility but focuses on a specific service or product.
For example, Legendary films is a division of Legendary Entertainment.

Conglomerate
An institution made up of a number of different companies that operate
in a range of mediums. Earning the most profit directly from the consumer.
For example, the Conglomerate that own Legendary films and other subsidiary
companies is Wanda Group.
EXAM Q:
Applying the concept of institutions to Inception (2010) and Jurassic Park (1993), evaluate the role institutions play in producing films?
A media institution is an organization or company responsible for producing media texts or media products. The primary aim of these institutions is to create a highly profitable media product such as the film Inception. Inception is a 2010 feature film produced by Legendary Pictures, which is a division of Legendary Entertainment, the subsidiary of the conglomerate Wanda Group. Within the making of Inception, these two institutions control and produce the representation of the media product, Inception. A budget is given, in this case for $160 million in order to create a product to be sold to a specific mainstream target audience and demographic, which has been meticulously researched in the planning stage. As a result of the in depth planning from the pre-production staff and the specialist within the production company, for example the Director Christopher Nolan, the film grossed $825.4 million at the box office. This created a profit of $665.5 million for the conglomerate, Wanda group, as they receive the largest percentage of the profit. To summarize; the producers (institution) make a representation of a cinematic ‘world’ of Inception, in which the target audience uses their disposable income to pay for the gratification of diversion into this ‘world’ (Blumler and Katz 1974, Uses and Gratification theory), thus the profit of this then gets taken by the conglomerate. Yet, some of this profit may be used again to produce potential films with the aim to make more money. This process is not limited to the film industry as it takes place within the music industry with media products being the music artists and the computer games industry with the media products being the video game. The way that these institutions can garner the greatest profit is through ‘illusion of choice’.
The illusion of choice is the barrier between the conglomerate and the audience, where the disposable income of the audiences may be intended for the crew and cast, however the overall profit is mostly shared from the conglomerate to the subsidiary and then division, where the percentage of profit decreases as it shares downwards. As long as the illusion of choice remains in the eye’s of the audiences, the conglomerates will always have more than the other levels, keeping them satisfied and the authority of using the profit to create more media products to distribute for more profit. Yet if the film (for instance Titanic) does flop, the institutions above Paramount Pictures (a division) have nothing to worry about, such as Viacom - the conglomerate - as they would have other various media products (film, cartoon, series, TV shows) already are preparing to be distributed through many other media platforms to collect profit from target audiences by the illusion of choice of the most popular media text they own.
Speaking of authority, the Institutions’ role in producing film is always in their control for pre and post production, with NBCUniversal and Comcast as conglomerates having the authority and power to hire or fire any crew within the subsidiary and division group that were in the process of making Jurassic Park (1993). The conglomerates could also make changes that would’ve made it in the final version of the film, such as a desired representation of something or a stereotype of a group of people they think are needed in the film to please/appeal to the target audience. For example, the portrayal of the antagonist character: Dennis Nedry, who is represented by Wayne Knight, fulfills the stereotypical fat, rude and extremely intelligent computer nerd to hack the whole security system of an island. This decision can be made by the conglomerate if the casting of Dennis Nedry did not seem to match their representation of the "computer nerd", which will significantly impact on how the film turns out to be through the actors who are hired to represent and instill the character in the audience's minds. Conglomerates and subsidiary institutions also have control over planning and storyline stages, the screenplay and script between the characters, and how the - now contemporarily famous park - in Jurassic Park looked in their vision.
HEGEMONY
Hegemony is the dominance or leadership of one social group or nation over others.

It is the way in which those in power maintain their control.
LET ME CONTROL THE MEDIA AND I WILL TURN ANY NATION INTO A HERD OF PIGS.
Joseph Goebbels
Minister of Nazi Propaganda
Subordinate
A person under the authority or control of another within an organization.
Coercion
It uses the army, the police, prisons and courts of the capitalist state to force other classes to accept its role.
Consent
It uses the media and values to persuade the subordinate class that its rule is legitimate (lawful/justified)
Subjugate
To bring something/someone under domination or control, especially by conquest.
(bring down enemy, dismiss public opinion)
Research; Studying about the ways of how the power blocs subliminally control and manipulate the lower and working classes will not only be useful to base research for my short film; various ways the society entity disrupts the protagonist from gratification (consent and coercion ways), but also to my knowledge and passion for analyzing the mood and message of a film to its audiences.
EXAM Q:
Explain, using examples of films, explain how Media helps to reinforce hegemony?
Hegemony is the act of dominating a social group or nation through leadership and power. It is the way to maintain authority. In the film Team America: World Police, the police protagonists- represented by excessive stereotypes of body armour, guns, donuts and handcuffs (which will appeal and become relatable to target audiences who are existing/ex law enforcers as part of their lifestyle); will fight to maintain and take back power from the antagonists- represented with the stereotype of white dirty robes and long beards to that of a typical terrorist. The narrative strongly implies hegemony through the denotation of coercion in the film, with excessive use of violence that the protagonists engage upon the terrorist: such as tearing limbs, exploding their heads and other violent deaths. However the connotation undermines hegemony through consent as the audience who watched the film become persuaded of the law enforcer’s legitimacy. Thus this is an example of a media product, in this case Team America: World Police, reinforcing the concept of hegemony between the U.S. defense system and the rest of the generalized terrorists in the world, being coercive as a denotation to give pleasure to the audience, while actually persuading the consent idea to look up to the army and America’s power.
In the process of creating the film and its ideologies to reinforce hegemony, the institutions of the conglomerates and subsidiaries may request explicit or hidden implications of the hegemony they want to achieve through consent. For example, the conglomerate Danjaq may urge the subsidiary Eon Productions to produce the lines of the 007 movies to shed light upon the United States government.
Reflect; I now understand the concepts of hegemony and its inevitable presence in all types of films, whether it would be through consent or coercion, hegemony- to an extent- is always needed to send or imply (a) message(s).
Relate; Drawing upon this research, the dream team can now safely say that the short film, based on society and its control and prevention of gratification over the subordinates in various ways, can now fully begin a secure production stage with insightful research into not only the Uses and Gratifications Theory, but also Hegemony and its many forms. We can now plan and base our story board to accomodate the types of consent and coercion that the protagonist will experience (when prevented) to reach his pleasure sources (sleeping, eating, excreting). Exciting times ahead!
IDEOLOGIES
An ideology is a concept made up of different/singular idea(s) from an individual or a group of people with a set of specific beliefs.
An ideology is a world view, a system of values, attitudes and beliefs which an individual, group or society holds to be true of important; these are shared by a culture or society about how that society should function.
DOMINANT IDEOLOGIES
They are ideologies that are commonly told to us to the point where we could consider it as being “normal, natural, or common sense”. Thus, this inhibits people from rebelling/challenging these beliefs, and maintains the stability in society.
Research; Now, just only initially grasping the ideas of the basis of our short film (Gratification) and types of hegemony to spice up the plot, I now need to understand the concept of an ideology and apply it to my film for an intended message to be sent across, as well as a goal during production to know what meaning we need to create.

-
There is a dominant ideology in every society
-
Cultural Hegemony (The Media) is a process
-
The power bloc (ruling class) uses this to keep the oppressed in order
-
Power blocs uses Hegemonic Forms (media texts) and distribute it to the people
-
The people experiences these hegemonic forms and gets pleasure/gratification
-
The audience think they are getting something
-
This is actually perceived; they are getting controlled by the power bloc’s dominant ideology through the consent form and illusion of choice
Antonio Gramsci Theory
Preferred Readings
-
The Playboy magazines perpetuates traditional views and stereotypes of femininity.
-
It therefore serves the interests of the power bloc (male-dominated)
-
We live in a patriarchal society (male-led and male dominated)
-
These views are called the PREFERRED READING
Producers of a media text design it with a certain meaning in mind. They hope that audiences will decode their text in a certain way. Preferred readings are those which tie in with hegemonic beliefs.
In the film Legally Blonde (2001), the power bloc’s preferred reading of women conveys the typical stereotypes of women’s exteriors: white skin, fit body, artificial beauty, and the physical manhood of shirtless and carnal men..etc in fulfilling the dominant ideology of the “perfect world”, where everyone is white-dominated, healthy, educated, and everything is ‘loose’. Using the non-diegetic sound of “A perfect day”, this undermines the preferred reading from the power blocs that everything shown- including the subliminal AND explicit stereotypes- is exactly what the world is supposed to be in order to be “perfect”.
In the film Aliens (1986), the preferred reading conveyed by the power blocs are of masculinity within women; with the mise en scene of bullets reloading, clips and magazines around her, amour and gear, as well as taking off her jacket to expose of her sweaty white t-shirt; suggesting braveness but also something conventional to what a man would do (Marlon Brando in A StreetCar Named Desire 1951), in addition, this may symbolize Ripley- the protagonist- literally getting out of her comfort zone, and overall suggesting the dominance women can hold, even with a gun twice as large as her body.
Reflect; Realizing how influential media is to me as the consumer with its preferred readings and the sometimes hidden dominant ideologies in their hegemonic forms, I am both amazed and worried at the subliminal power the power blocs have over me through the illusion of choice. This has totally changed my views on media products, and of course, every other sexually-treated preferred reading magazines will now get my full attention- not on the females- but rather on the dominant ideology it is trying to convey.
Relate; Our short film will contain the dominant ideology of the power bloc's oppression and manipulation of those below them socially and economically through an entity form as the antagonist against a young, lower class student doing various activities that are his gratification sources. Also, in one scene, we will be making different media platforms disapear around him; the power blocs have enough power to make or break hegemonic forms instantly.
CapiTALISM
The Concept of
The power bloc (more wealthier and powerful) using hegemony on those oppressed, causing them to socioeconomically and potentially physically die away.
Capitalism is an economic system in which the means of production of goods or services are privately owned and operated for a profit.
The 4 major characteristics of Capitalism
-
Business capital is privately owned
-
Buyers and sellers control the economy (supply demand)
-
Free-will to spend money
-
Minimal government supervision
CAPITAL means wealth in the form of money or assets owned by person of institution
Trickle down economics is a term used to describe the belief that if high income earners gain an increase in salary, then everyone in the economy will benefit as their increased income and wealth filter through to all sections in society.
Individual material gain is the accumulation of wealth, assets, celebrity or fame by one person.
EXAM Q:
Explain using precise examples how films reflect the capitalist system in which we live in?
The dominant ideology of capitalism and its ideals are imminent within many films, and the preferred readings of the stereotypes depicting its characteristics can be given to the target audience and demographics through hegemonic forms in the consent or coercive way.
An ideal of capitalism is the concept of individual material gain, suggesting that one accumulates their wealth through various assets and platforms, eventually making them a power bloc. In addition, this may lead to trickle down economics, which suggests that the wealth from the power blocs (conglomerates) are to fall upon the hands of the middle then lower classes eventually in time, giving everyone a chance to socioeconomically survive. Richie Rich (1994) demonstrates the individual material gain concept through Mr. and Mrs. Rich’s gradual accumulation of wealth that had made them the richest people on earth- arguably the most powerful conglomerates to live- which supports the main features of capitalism; the Rich family to spend their disposable income with free will, and their business to be owned by themselves and not the government. Furthermore, the more they invest, the more the wealth falls below them to the secretaries, workers, drivers, pilots, and captains (the middle to lower class) working for the Rich family. This clearly outlines the process of trickle down economics in the Rich Business empire.
